A man identified as Ejike Nwankwo Ohagba from Ezigbo village, Igbo-Ukwu com­munity, Aguata Local Govern­ment Area of Anambra State on Thursday, April 7, went crazy and threw his mother into an abandoned well in his father’s compound. A 28-year-old student-pastor, Akintunde Olatunde, was today sentenced to three years imprisonment for burglary by an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court in Osun. The magistrate, Mr Olusola Aluko, in his judgment, said the convict should be kept behind bars due to the magnitude of his offence. The prosecutor, Insp. Fagboyinbo Abiodun, had earlier told the court that the convict committed the offence on June 10 at about 5:00 p.m., in Omobolanle area of Osogbo. Abiodun said the convict conspired with others now at large to break into the apartments and shops in the neighborhood where they carted away some household and perishable items. It was widely reported yesterday that in a letter dated June 2, 2016, signed by Victor Okasoga, the Senior Manager in charge of Human Resources of Daar Communications Plc, the management of the African Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower FM Stations officially sacked all the workers of its station in Benin, the Edo State capital. In a press release obtained by correspondents, Daar Communications, the parent company of both stations has spoken out on the sack of its staff in Edo State. According to the statement, the management disclosed that only 13 of their 40 operational staff strength were laid off. The manangement also said that the sack was necessitated as a result of poor performance and incompetency on the part of the affected staff.

A 25-year-old, Akeem Edun, who allegedly beat up his stepmother, was on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court. Edun, who lives with his father at Ogun River Road, Isheri, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for assault. Prosecutor Donjor Perezi told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 28 at his residence. He said the accused engaged his stepsister in a fight and she ran to her mother. “When the accused did not see the girl he decided to beat up her mother and in the process, he damaged the woman’s chair,” according to Sgt. Perezi. The offence contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The accused pleaded innocence of the offence and was granted bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum. The Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Layinka, adjourned the case to July 11 for mention.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Regiment personnel commenced Rappelling Refresher Exercise on Friday June 10th in Kaduna state. The 8-day exercise is code-named Exercise Rockfall and the objective is to sharpen the professional skills of rappellers in the NAF for operational efficiency through training and retraining. A total of 31 airmen and an officer are participating in the exercise.
